About Me
I am an engineering geologist studying slope failures and their impact on mountain infrastructure. My work combines field geophysics, geospatial analysis, and machine learning to understand why slopes fail and where they are likely to fail next.
Research
Why do slopes along mountain transport routes fail, and can we see it coming?
That question runs through my work. In mountain regions like the Western Ghats, roads and railways cross terrain that fails repeatedly, and every failure gets attributed to rain. But rain falls on the whole mountain, and only some slopes fail. The difference lies in what is under the surface and what moves over it.
My research interests follow from that:
- Subsurface controls on slope failure: using geophysics to image the weathered zones, water pathways, and weak layers that surface mapping misses
- Anthropogenic triggers: measuring how traffic, construction, and land-use change load fragile slopes alongside natural drivers
- Data-driven susceptibility mapping: building machine learning models on ground-truth inventories to predict failure-prone stretches at scales that agencies can act on
- Hazard–infrastructure interaction: quantifying what slope failures cost transport networks and where mitigation matters most
